Installing Your SMART Link Satellite Terminal

Installing your ACeS FR-190 or FR-190G Fixed Satellite Terminal is simple.  Follow the instructions below when installing the terminal to ensure optimum performance.

1.  Determining Antenna Location and Direction
Prior to the installation of the Antenna, you have to determine where to install it and how it will be directed towards the satellite.

The following steps will help you find the best location and direction for your Antenna:

a) Determine Your Geographic Region
The maps below show the coverage of the ACeS and Inmarsat Networks.  Identify the region or country you are in on the map.
.

Figure 1a:  ACeS Spotbeam Allocation Map

Notes:
  • Big circles denote angle of elevation.
  • Small circles denote spotbeam with the corresponding spotbeam number inside each circle.
  • Center dot (point of intersection between the NS and EW line) denotes satellite direction.

Figure 1b:  Inmarsat Spotbeam Allocation Map

Notes:

  • Black numbers are SPS Logical Beam Numbers or Spot Beam Numbers
  • Red numbers are channel numbers

b) Determine the Antenna Direction
The largest circles in the map above give the elevation angle and the direction towards the satellite is the direction from your region or country towards the center of the circles.  The following table gives a few examples.

c) Avoid Obstructions
When choosing the location of your Antenna, make sure that there are no obsctructions such as trees, buildings or other structures that might block the signal being transmitted to and from the satellite.

Figure 2:  Example of Obstruction Towards the Satellite

Note:
To achieve optimum quality and service, the antenna should always be pointed to the satellite at all time.

2.  Assembling the Antenna

Figure 3:  Assembling Antenna to Mounting Plate

Procedure:

  1. Connect the Mounting Pole to the Antenna using the long bolt and a butterfly nut.  Slightly tighten the nut just enough to prevent the Antenna to swivel freely.
  2. Insert the extended pole of the Mounting Plate to the Mounting Pole and slightly tighten them together using the short bolt.

3.  Attaching the Antenna Assembly to a Pole

Figure 4:  Attaching Antenna Assembly to Pole

Procedure:

  1. Install a pole either on the roof on on the ground.  See notes below.
  2. Place the V-shaped grooves on the Antenna Assembly to the pole.
  3. Insert the clamps around the pole and through the holes of the Mounting Plate.
  4. Thread the washers and nuts into the screw threads of the clamp.
  5. Tighten the four nuts so that the Antenna is fastened securely to the pole.

Notes:

  • A pipe or pole between 3/4-inch and 5/4-inch (1.9 cm to 3.2 cm) in diameter must be provided by the user.  The pole should be made of steel or material strong enough to support the Antenna.
  • Attach the pole to the roof of the building or at the ground by using metal clamps or by setting it in a concrete base in the upright position.
  • To avoid the possibility of lightning strike, ensure that the top of the Antenna is set at a lower height than the highest building or tree within the immediate area.

4.  Adjusting the Antenna Elevation and Direction

Figure 5:  Adjusting the Antenna Elevation and Direction

Procedure:

  1. Adjust the Antenna elevation by swiveling it up and down so that it is in line with the required elevation angle.  Tighten the long bolt to keep the Antenna at the desired elevation.
  2. Point the Antenna  towards the satellite direction by turning it around the Mounting Plate.  Loosen the short bolt that holds the Mounting Pole to the Mounting Plate, if necessary.  Once completed, tighten the short bolt to keep the Antenna at the desired direction.

5.  Connecting the Antenna Cable

Figure 6:  Connecting the Antenna Calbe

Procedure:

  1. Take the end of the Antenna Cable with the N-Type connector.
  2. Connect the Antenna Cable to the Antenna Connector and tighten it firmly.

6.  Wrapping The Antenna Connector

Figure 7:  Wrapping the Antenna Connector

Procedure:

  1. Stick the end of the rubber tape at the top of the connector.  Stretch it and wind clockwise down to its length.  Each turn should half overlap the previous turn.
  2. After its length reaches about 10 cm, reverse the direction and wind the tape back towards the top of the connector.
  3. Continue until all the tape is used up.

7.  Tying The Antenna Cable

Figure 8:  Tying the Antenna Cable

Procedure:

  1. Allow the cable to arch away from the pole (as shown in Figure 8) to enable adjustment of the Antenna elevation.
  2. Use the cable ties provided to tie the cable to the pole below the Mounting Plate.
  3. Use the cable ties at even intervals so that is looks tidy.
  4. Lay the cable from the Antenna to the Main Box.

NOTES:

  • Do not hammer nails through the cable
  • Use standard cable clamps to affix the cable to wall, plank, etc.

8.  Setting Up the Main Box
Following are some requirements for the installation of the Main Box:

  1. The Main Box should be located indoors.
  2. The Main Box should be located in a dry place.
  3. The Main Box should be placed in a dust-free place.
  4. The Main Box should be placed in a normal room temparature, with no direct exposure to sunlight.
  5. The Main Box should be located near a power outlet.
  6. The Main Box should be located in a place where the Antenna Cable can reach it.
  7. The Main Box should not be located in a place that is too close to any radio communications equipment, such as CB and SSB, which could cause interference to the signal.

9.  Connecting the Antenna Cable to the Main Box

Figure 9:  Antenna Cable To Main Box connection

Procedure:

  1. Connect the other end of the Antenna Cable (SMA type connector) to the connector marked "ANTENNA" on the Main Box.
  2. Turn the connector clockwise and tighten by hand.  Do not use wrench or overturn the connector for it may damage the Main Box.

10.  Connecting the Telephone Set

Figure 10:  Connection of Main Box to Telephone Set

Procedure:

  1. Place the telephone set in the desired location.  You may use a longer telephone cable to locate the telephone set far from the Main Box.
  2. Connect the telephone cable connector to the Main Box connector marked "PHONE".

11.  Connecting the Power Adapter

Figure 11:  Connecting the Main Box to Power Adapter

Figure 12:  Connecting the Power Adapter to the Power Supply

Procedure:

  1. Connect the Power Adapter cable connector to the Main Box connector marked "POWER".
  2. Connect the Power Adapter to the power outlet.

NOTES:

  • Ensure that the power source is compatible with the Power Adapter, i.e. either 110V or 220V.
  • Please use only the Power Adapter provided in the package.
