Smart, UNICEF Partner To Uphold The Rights Of Children
[July 13. 2007/ Manila] - Leading wireless service provider, Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), recently partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to develop unique financial and communication services that will make it possible for Smart ’s 26 million subscribers to send in their much-needed donations to UNICEF for the improvement of the welfare of Filipino children.
One of the highlights of the tie-up developed by Smart ’s Wireless Consumer Solutions Group, involves enabling UNICEF to accept donations via the Smart Money platform. The platform allows subscribers to pay bills, do account balance checks, transfer funds all via their cellular phones. It is the world’s first secure, re-loadable electronic wallet card linked to a mobile phone. It also won the 3GSM Award for “Most Innovative GSM Wireless Service for Customers” in 2001.
“We at Smart truly believe that we contribute to the convergence of people—male, or female; rich or poor; old or young. We strive hard so that through our services, we make a real difference in the lives of Filipinos, and now, in the lives of Filipino children,” said Perry V. Bayani, Head of Sales and Business Development for Smart.
With just a few simple clicks on their mobile phones, Smart subscribers can bring underprivileged children one step closer to their dreams of a better life. A person’s simple donation sent via Smart Money can make a significant impact in the lives of disadvantaged Filipino children, ranging from food, medicines and vaccination, books and school supplies, even counseling services.
“UNICEF is grateful to companies like Smart who are willing to support the work for children because they believe that children must be given the best start in life, that these young ones should have access to proper education and health services, and that children’s rights should be upheld at all times,” remarked Dr. Nicholas K. Alipui, Unicef Representative to the Philippines.
While the challenge of improving the lives of children seem too great to solve alone, both UNICEF and Smart are optimistic t5hat their joint efforts will pave the way for a nurturing environment and an improved quality of life.
Alipui added, “We thank Smart for bringing us closer to their valued customers—people who have the means to help in making this country—and the world—fit for children. “
