With a nationwide presence, Smart cannot afford to ignore its responsibility to lead and contribute to efforts to institutionalize sound environmental practice in the telecoms industry.
Smart has been promoting a culture of environmental protection and conservation among employees by conducting treeplanting activities. More than 50,000 seeds and mangroves have been planted nationwide by employee-volunteers from both PLDT and Smart in various activities.
To raise employee awareness, Smart also conducted an environment awareness campaign in June 2007. Activities included a seminar on Global Warming, a Film Showing on the documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" and an exhibit on the company’s initiatives for the environment.
So far, efforts to institute environmental measures and activities in the company include the reduction of electricity consumption, biofuel testing, bantay baterya and waste management, as spearheaded by Smart's Administration and Materials Management Division.
The Network Services Division is also exploring the use of wind power systems, fuel catalysts, electronic power savers, DC fans and coolers and cost-effective lightings to reduce carbon emission as well as to generate savings.
With its thrust to go green, Smart is showing it cares for the environment.
