Disaster Preparedness and Response
Communications Support
Wireless Connectivity Solutions
As the communications partner of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), SMART provides airtime, in some cases cellular phones, and a range of wireless connectivity solutions to ensure that the agency’s voice and data requirements for search, rescue, retrieval and relief operations are met. Through the years, SMART has provided prepaid and postpaid GSM services, satellite telephony services where there is no GSM signal, and starting with the tragic landslide that buried an entire town in Guinsaugon, Southern Leyte in February 2006, broadband Internet connectivity through Smart Bro and PLDT WeRoam. These communication services have also been made available to responding government agencies like the National Disaster Coordinating Council and its underlying units.
Libreng Tawag (Free Call) Centers
SMART has made it the norm to provide free calls to those affected by the disaster or calamity via Smart Libreng Tawag (Free Call) Centers. The service has gone beyond mobile SMS and calls to satellite telephony in areas with no GSM signal and wireless broadband Internet via Smart Bro to accommodate the data requirements of government and civic agencies as well as media.
