Smart announces 4th SWEEP Excellence and Innovation Awards

[September 7, 2007/ Manila] - Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) is now accepting entries to the 4th SWEEP Excellence and Innovation Awards.

Open to undergraduates from partner colleges and universities under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), the annual event is a search for outstanding wireless applications that benefit the school and/or their community, and which are accessible via the Smart network.  This year’s search will carry the theme “Going Wireless for Disaster Preparedness”. 

Participating teams, each composed of students and a faculty mentor, have until the end of the month to submit their entries.  Ten entries will be shortlisted.  Of these finalists, the top three that comes up with wireless applications that best utilize the potential of wireless technology for disaster preparedness will receive cash rewards and an equivalent amount in the form of grants for their respective schools.  Close to P2M in prizes is at stake.  

The 4th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards culminates with the awarding ceremony, which will be held in February 2008 in Cebu City.  The event, which is open to the public, will feature working models of original wireless applications developed by the top ten finalists.
 
Other activities include the yearly PalaECEpan quiz bee to be participated in by student representatives from SWEEP partner schools.  There will also be a job fair, interactive booth exhibits, free Internet surfing, raffle draws and games to delight participating students and visitors alike.   

Smart is conducting the SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards for the fourth straight year as part of SWEEP, its community service initiative that aims to improve the level of technology and engineering education in the country. @
