Cagayan National High School Joins The Smart Schools Program
[March 3, 2007/ Manila] - Cagayan National High School (CNHS), the oldest secondary level school in the Cagayan Province, is now a Smart Schools Program school partner.
Its computer laboratory was upgraded into a Smart Teacher Learning Resource Center with 10 of its computers now connected to the Internet via Smart Bro, Smart’s wireless broadband solution.
The newly-improved laboratory was turned over during an event that formally welcomed the learning institution into the Smart Schools Program, the flagship education program of Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) that aims to promote Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in public high schools.
Aside from the Internet connection that is given free for one year, the school will also receive ICT skills training for teachers, who are expected to share the knowledge with the students and other members of the community. In addition, they can gain access to online educational information via the program’s website, www.smartschools.ph.
Housing more than 7,000 students, CNHS recognizes the advantage of having additional resources. “Training can now go farther, we can teach more and reach more,” said Dr. Linda P. Tungcul, CNHS principal.
At the turnover ceremony, Darwin Flores, Smart Public Affairs Group senior manager for community partnerships, challenged the school’s faculty to develop their website and generate local content. “Let us not just remain as users. Let’s be contributors too,” he stressed.
CNHS joins over a hundred schools from Basa Batanes up north, to Bongao Tawi-Tawi down south, that have been enjoying the benefits of being a partner school. Launched in December 2004, the Smart Schools Program is implemented in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress, supported by Microsoft’s Partners in Learning and the Department of Education.
